Observations: a seasonal underfoot experience
in Observations

Across the seasons, the landscape changes underfoot as much as it does at eye level. By mid-autumn, the ground has a different texture, a different sound, and a different temperature. It is softer where leaves have begun to compost, sharper where the first frost has stiffened the soil overnight.
Within designed spaces, the floor is where the seasonal underfoot experience can continue. An alternation of soft and hard, cool and warm, marking transitions that define spaces while stimulating gently, through the feet’s own sense of touch.
The Observations grow from a daily habit of noticing details in nature and drawing design insights from them. They’re collected in a monthly digest as part of anooi’s newsletter, which gathers the studio’s world and explores the idea of nourishing spaces. The same attunement shapes the studio’s work, lives in A Biophilic Year – a book-object and online archive on people, nature, and design – and becomes a sensory practice with In Season, a seasonal physical letter.
