Observations: autumn and the invitation to slow down
in Observations

Humans perceive when the autumn season settles. The lower sun, the earlier dark, the air turning crisper… These are signals the body feels and the mind interprets as invitations to slow down.
Spaces that support this slowing are lit warmly for the longer evenings, have places to shelter and find refuge, retain warmth and provide it, in temperature as much as in atmosphere. These spaces are participating in a seasonal sensibility that is older than any design movement, bringing the rhythms of the living world into the built environment.
The Observations grow from a daily habit of noticing details in nature and drawing design insights from them. They’re collected in a monthly digest as part of anooi’s newsletter, which gathers the studio’s world and explores the idea of nourishing spaces. The same attunement shapes the studio’s work, lives in A Biophilic Year – a book-object and online archive on people, nature, and design – and becomes a sensory practice with In Season, a seasonal physical letter.
