Observations: when thresholds become experiences
in Observations

A wave’s edge on the shore is a fascinating threshold: the line between two entire worlds drawn and redrawn with each wave. What makes this threshold different from designed ones is that it is by definition ephemeral, directing the attention towards the experience of crossing rather than the line itself.
Thoughtfully designed thresholds and transitions embrace a similar logic. How wide a passage is, what materials mark it, whether it is lit or in shade… Each decision is more than aesthetic, aimed instead at shaping an intuitive and engaging experience of moving through.
The Observations grow from a daily habit of noticing details in nature and drawing design insights from them. A habit behind A Biophilic Year and the studio’s work. Collected in a monthly digest as part of anooi’s newsletter.
