Observations: designing for one particular light
in Observations

A spiderweb is woven anew most nights and is, for most of the day, essentially invisible: a few threads, easy to miss, easy to walk through. Then, on an autumn afternoon, the light hits at exactly the right angle, and for a moment the whole structure is revealed: every thread, every anchor point, an entire architecture that the next day will undo.
Designed spaces can embody a similar quality with materials chosen for how they catch the light of a particular hour, surfaces that only show their grain at a certain angle, rooms whose atmosphere changes with the moment in the day. This is a quiet form of character a space can have, one that patiently waits to be revealed and noticed.
The Observations grow from a daily habit of noticing details in nature and drawing design insights from them. They’re collected in a monthly digest as part of anooi’s newsletter, which gathers the studio’s world and explores the idea of nourishing spaces. The same attunement shapes the studio’s work, lives in A Biophilic Year – a book-object and online archive on people, nature, and design – and becomes a sensory practice with In Season, a seasonal physical letter.
