Observations: on how form suggests use

Some forms seem to have been waiting. The low bend in a branch at exactly sitting height, the hollow in a rock that the back can settle into, the dip in a lawn that has clearly cradled bodies before. None of these was born with this purpose, yet they fit, spontaneously inviting the body.
Spaces can be designed around this instinct, with furniture that accommodates gestures, with pathways placed where they are intuitive… The most settled spaces are the ones that noticed where people wanted to be, and built outward from there.

The Observations grow from a daily habit of noticing details in nature and drawing design insights from them. A habit behind A Biophilic Year and the studio’s work. Collected in a monthly digest as part of anooi’s newsletter.
